John 19:34 and The Dead Sea Scrolls – Blood and Water

John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

28…But you, when my heart turned to water confirmed my soul in your covenant… 32 …You have freed the life of the poor person which they thought to finish off, pouring out his blood while he was at your service. 33 But they did not know that my steps come from you.

Matthew 18:15 and the Dead Sea Scrolls – Established by Witnesses

Matthew 18:15 “If your brother sins [against you], go, tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every matter may be established by the word of two or three witnesses.’

Each should reprove his fellow in truth, in humility, and in loving-kindness. He should not speak to him in anger or grumbling or wicked arrogance. He must not hate him in his heart. Instead, he is to rebuke him that same day so that he is not liable for sin. And let no man bring a public charge against his fellow unless he has rebuked him before witnesses. Matthew 19:28 and The Dead Sea Scrolls Apostles Sitting on Thrones

Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:28

He will be called the Son of God, and they will call him the son of the Most High… Their kingdom will be an eternal kingdom, and all their paths will be in truth. They will judge the earth in truth, and all will make peace. The sword will cease from the earth, and all the provinces will pay them homage. Luke 03:07-14 Baptism – John the Baptist and the Dead Sea Scrolls

John the Baptist baptized people less than 10 miles from where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Below is a parallel between John the Baptist’s preaching and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Defiled, defiled shall he be all the days he spurns the decrees of God, without allowing himself to be taught by the Community of his counsel. For, by the spirit of the true counsel concerning the paths of man all his sins are atoned so that he can look at the light of life. And by the spirit of holiness which links him with his truth he is cleansed of all his sins. And by the spirit of uprightness and of humility his sin is atoned. And by the compliance of his soul with all the laws of God his flesh is cleansed by being sprinkled with cleansing waters and being made holy with the waters of repentance. May he, then, steady his steps in order to walk with perfection on all the paths of God, conforming to all he has decreed concerning the regular times of his commands and not turn aside, either left or right, no infringe even one of his words. In this way he will be admitted by means of atonement pleasing to God, and for him it will be the covenant of an everlasting Community. Dead Sea Scrolls[1Q Rule of the Community (1QS) COL III 6-12]

Luke 03:07 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” 10 And the multitudes asked him, “What then should we do?” 11 He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than is appointed you.” 14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” So he said to them, “Rob no one by violence, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

Matthew 03:11-12 Baptism of Fire

John the Baptist baptized people less than 10 miles from where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. There are thematic parallels between gospel passages concerning John the Baptist and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Matthew 3:12

The obliteration of all the inhabitants of the earth - Gather together and huddle up, people, before you scatter like chaff which passes in one day without shame, before the fire of the Lord’s wrath overtakes you, before the day of the Lord’s wrath overtakes you. The interpretation of the word concerns all the occupants of the land of Judah…

The Foreshadowing of the Betrayal

In the foreshadowing of the betrayal, Judas Iscariot was foreshadowed by Judah the Patriarch (in Greek and Hebrew they have the same name). The House of Joseph the Patriarch foreshadowed the House of the Last Supper (some traditions indicate it was the House of Joseph of Arimathea)

They made everything ready for eating bread there Matthew 26:17-19 - Genesis 45:24
Foot washing Matthew 16:13-23 - Genesis 45:26
Serving the food Matthew 26:14-31 - Genesis 43:31
The men had been seated before him ...they looked at each other in astonishment. Matthew 26:47-56 - Genesis 43:33
They feasted and drank Matthew 27:57-60 - Genesis 43:34
The cup my master drinks from Mark 14:10-11 - Genesis 44:5
One of them is accused of stealing silver or gold and that person will die. Mark 14:43-52 - Genesis 44:8
“What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination (supernaturally)?” Mark 15:42-46 - Genesis 44:15
“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. … Luke 22:3-30 - Genesis 44:16
Then Judah stepped up to him Luke 22:47-53 - Genesis 44:18
Judah and [those with him] they threw themselves to the ground before him. Luke 23:50-54 - Genesis 44:14
‘Why have you repaid good with evil? This is a wicked thing you have done.’” John 12:6 - Genesis 44:4
I shall bear the blame in the sight of my father all my life.’ John 13:1-14:10 - Genesis 44:32

John 01:12 - Stand up for your rights!

But to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – John 1:12

Who was the Greatest Follower of Jesus? Joseph of Arimathea - John 19:38-42 Genesis 50:01-13

During Jesus’ ministry different people momentarily became his greatest follower. At the moment when Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body, he was the greatest follower of Jesus. The greatest followers of Jesus were foreshadowed by Joseph the patriarch. In this example, the foreshadowing includes:

Both Joseph of Arimathea and Joseph the Patriarch were secretly brethren
John 19:38 But after this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly,
Genesis 42:8 Thus Joseph knew his brothers, but they did not know him.

Both Joseph of Arimathea and Joseph the Patriarch ask the ruling authority for permission to bury the body
John 19:38 But after this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.
Genesis 50:4 And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 My father made me swear, saying, `I am about to die: in my tomb which I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.' Now therefore let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father; then I will return." 6 And Pharaoh answered, "Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear."

Both Joseph of Arimathea and Joseph the Patriarch prepare the body for burial with help
John 19:39 And Nicodemus, who had at first come to him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
Genesis 50:2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel…

Both Joseph of Arimathea and Joseph the Patriarch bury the body in a tomb
John 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
Genesis 50:5 My father made me swear, saying, `I am about to die: in my tomb which I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.' Now therefore let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father; then I will return."

Who was the Greatest Follower of Jesus? Luke 23:40-43 Genesis 40:01-14

During Jesus’ ministry different people momentarily became his greatest follower. At the moment when the criminal on the cross asked Jesus to, “remember me when you come into your kingdom” - he was the greatest follower of Jesus. The greatest followers of Jesus were foreshadowed by Joseph the patriarch. In this example, the foreshadowing includes:

The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and they called together the whole battalion. Mark 15:16
…and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard. Genesis 40:3

One of the two criminals with Jesus asked Jesus to, “remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Luke 23:42
Joseph the patriarch was one of two criminals with the butler in the dungeon and he asked the butler, “remember me, when it is well with you” Genesis 40:14

On the third day after his death, Jesus was raised from the dead and - …he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. 1Corinthians 15:04b
Then Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days; within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office…” Genesis 40:12-13

Jesus is associated with the vine – “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” John 15:1
The butler was associated with the vine - So the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, "In my dream there was a vine before me.” Genesis 40:9

Luke 23:40 But the other answered, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
