When John the Baptist saw Jesus he said - John 1:29 “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John’s statement indicates that Jesus is prophetically foreshadowed by the Passover Lamb.

Jesus and the Passover Lamb were without blemish

Exodus 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

Hebrews 9:14 …the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, …

 

Jesus and the Passover Lamb were killed by the whole assembly of the congregation.

Exodus 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Matthew 27:25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

 

The body of Jesus (The bread and wine at the last supper) and the Passover Lamb were eaten by the congregation

Exodus 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Matthew 26:26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and, giving it to the disciples, said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

 

The blood of Jesus and the Passover Lamb was smeared on wooden posts.

Exodus 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Matthew 27:26 And when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

 

The blood of Jesus and the Passover Lamb protect people from destruction.

Exodus 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Matthew 26:27 Then he took a cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

 

The death of Jesus and the Passover Lamb is a day of remembrance for ever.

Exodus 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 Likewise he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

 

The bones of Jesus and the Passover Lamb were not broken.

Exodus 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shall not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.

John 19:31 Therefore, because it was the day of Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 He who saw it has testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth, that you also may believe. 36 For these things were done that the scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of his bones shall be broken.” 

 

After the Passover Lamb died, the first born of the Egyptians died and after Jesus died, the first born of the dead arose.

Exodus 12:30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

Matthew 27:52 And the tombs were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

The preparation of the Passover Lamb foreshadows the death of Jesus:

 

The Lamb of God would be a male without blemish (sin).^PL1 He would be killed by the whole assembly of the congregation at Passover.^PL2 The congregation would eat his flesh with unleavened bread at Passover.^PL3 His blood would be smeared on wooden posts at Passover.^PL4 None of his bones would be broken when he was sacrificed.^PL5 His sacrifice would take place in Jerusalem in the evening as the sun set.^PL6 His blood would be a token to protect people from destruction.^PL7 The day of his death would be a day of remembrance forever.^PL8

The Shepherds Witnessed the Birth of The Lamb of God

God sent the angels to tell the shepherds about the birth of Christ. The shepherds became witnesses about the birth of Christ. So why did God want shepherds to be witnesses about the birth of Christ? Shepherds know a Lamb when they see one.

Luke 2:9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. 11 For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” 15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds spoke to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen him, they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.
