Mark 15:34 Jesus cried out with a loud voice – did you hear all of what he said?

Jesus is quoting Psalms 22:1 when he cried out with a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

If we look at the entire Psalm we will see that there is a lot more to hear.

Psalms 22:7 All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me, they wag their heads. This verse matches Mark 15:29 And those who passed by hurled insults at him, wagging their heads.

Psalms 22:8 "He committed his cause to the LORD; let him deliver him, let him rescue him, for he delights in him! This verse matches Matthew 27:43 He trusts in God? Let him deliver now, if he desires him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God!’“

Psalms 22:16 “Yea, dogs are round about me; a company of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet.” This verse matches the crucifixion (Mark 15:22-33).

Psalms 22:18 “They divide my garments among them, and for my raiment they cast lots.” This verse matches Mark 15:24 “And they crucified him, and ‘divided his garments, casting lots for them’ to determine what each man should take.”

But don’t stop there we’re starting to get to the best part.

Psalms 22:22 “I will tell of thy name to my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee” This verse matches John 20:19 “On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were (for fear of the Jews), Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 And saying this, he showed the hands and the side to them. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So [Jesus] said to them again, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you.”

Psalms 22:23 “You who fear the LORD, praise him! all you sons of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you sons of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; and he has not hid his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.” This verse corresponds to the Resurrection ~ Acts 13:30 But God raised him from the dead.

Psalms 22:26 “The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live for ever! 27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. 28 For dominion belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. 29 Yea, to him shall all the proud of the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and he who cannot keep himself alive. 30 Posterity shall serve him; men shall tell of the Lord to the coming generation, 31 and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, that he has wrought it.”

Psalms 22:26-31 corresponds to the time period from the Resurrection to forever. Always remember that on the cross when Jesus cried, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” he wasn’t just referring to the Crucifixion but he was also referring to the Resurrection, deliverance and forever.

Acts 17:27-31 Do you know God?

How do you tell people about God who don’t know God or the Bible? The Athenians didn’t know God or the Bible. Paul referred to something they did know – Greek poetry. In Acts 17:28 below, Paul quoted from two Greek poets to appeal to what the Athenians knew then he talked to them about what they didn’t know. It’s always a good idea to discuss things in terms that people understand.

Acts 17:27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
28        ‘For in him we live and move and have our being,’
as even some of your own poets have said,
            ‘We are his offspring.’
29 Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed. And of this he has given proof to all men by raising him from the dead.”

Acts 13:23-39 – The Shortest Gospel?

The passage below is considered by some scholars to be a gospel account. It is potentially the oldest shortest complete gospel account in the New Testament. The last verse of the section gives all Christians hope – “through Him everyone who believes is justified.”

J. Clontz – Editor of the Comprehensive New Testament

Acts 13:23 From this man’s [David’s] descendants God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised. 24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was completing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’
26 “Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us the message of this salvation was sent forth. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him. 28 Though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead. 31 And for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are [now] his witnesses to the people. 32 And we preach to you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, 33 he has fulfilled for us, [their] children, by raising up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm:
            ‘You are my Son.
                        Today I have begotten you.’
34 As for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to decay, he spoke in this way:
‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David,’
35 because he also says in another Psalm,
‘You will not let your Holy One see decay.’
36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers and saw decay. 37 But he whom God raised did not see decay. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. [And] from everything in Moses’ law which could not make you just – 39 through him everyone who believes is justified.

Mark 02:01-12 - The Words Everyone Will Want to Hear

One day everyone will want to hear – “Your sins are forgiven…RISE!”

In the passage below...

The four men bringing the paralytic to Jesus are similar to the four gospels bringing people to the words of Jesus.
The opening in the roof is similar to a tomb being opened.
The paralytic is similar to those who have “fallen asleep.”
The paralytic coming into Jesus’ presence is similar to the Day of Judgment.
The paralytic’s sins being forgiven are similar to the Last Judgment.
The paralytic rising and walking is similar to the Resurrection.

Hopefully, One Day we will hear Jesus speak the same words to us that he once spoke to the paralytic - “Your sins are forgiven…RISE!”

J. Clontz – Editor of the Comprehensive New Testament

1 And when he entered Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was home. 2 And many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And he preached the word to them. 3 Then they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not bring the man to him because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above him. And when they had broken through, they let down the pallet where the paralytic was lying. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, he said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, and take up your pallet and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth” – he said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home.” 12 And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out in front of them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
